Forest Management
License 3 overlays most of the southwest forested
area in Manitoba. This 5,863 square kilometer FML
is controlled by Louisiana-Pacific. Duck Mountain
Provincial Park lies entirely within FML 3. Roughly
47% of Duck Mountain is available to be clearcut
logged.
Louisiana-Pacific has a terrible environmental
track record. A Louisiana-Pacific plant in the united
states was given the largest-ever pollution fine--$11.1
million—for toxins from one of its U.S. plants.
A former CEO of Louisiana-Pacific was quoted as
saying about the forests:
“We need everything out…We
log to infinity. Because we need it all.
It’s ours. It’s out there, and we need
it all. Now.”
--then Louisiana-Pacific CEO Harry Merlo
Louisiana-Pacific’s long-term
tenure contract over this FML ended in 2004. The
corporation has been essentially operating illegally
ever since, with the provincial government allowing
them to continue.
The provincial government must remove Duck Mountain
Provincial Park from Forest Management License 3
when any new forest tenure contract is signed.
